When can friends and family visit?

We advise that only close family or friends visit during the first few days so that patients have the rest that they need.  Visitors are not usually allowed on the ward during the rest period (13.00 to 15.00 hours) or protected mealtimes (12.00 to 13.00 hours) or after 20.00 hours.

How much rest is needed immediately after a stroke?

Everyone who has had a stroke will feel more tired than usual. This can persist for several weeks or months. Therefore during the day there are set times for sitting in a chair and resting in bed.

Who provides a progress report?

You or your relatives might want to discuss progress, transfer of care or any concerns. They can talk to the ward manager, Alison Loosemore, or the person deputising for her.  The ward receptionist can make an appointment for relatives to see the doctors.

Patients or relatives can also see the Stroke Specialist Nurse, Helen Mann or the Stroke Co-ordinator on any weekday.  Their contact details are available on the ward. Arrangements can also be made for relatives to see the therapists to discuss aims of treatment sessions.

The multi-disciplinary team hold daily meetings to review every patients' progress and goals, and plan their transfer or discharge from the stroke unit.
